How to Choose a Suit for a Party

In the next few years, suits will trend toward classic styles. Double-breasted suits and three-piece suits are back, and they're not just being worn by celebrities and catwalk models. Modern stylish suits will be tailored to emphasize (or give the illusion of) broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and slim legs. Knowing all this might make choosing your next suit easier, but don't worry: there's still plenty of room to express yourself creatively. When you choose a suit, you should think about the number of buttons, the side vents, the lapels, the fabric, and the pattern. All of these elements can make or break your look.

Buttons

Suits typically come with one to three buttons. Four is rare, and is hard to pull off. A single button is also difficult to carry off unless you're very tall, as the more buttons a suit has the taller you appear. The two-button suit is an excellent choice if you're unsure, as it will never go out of fashion. It helps you appear taller and more elegant. Finally, the three-button suit is a great buy for a gentleman who already owns a suit and is looking for something a little more daring. This kind of suit was popular in the 1990s but is definitely becoming trendy once again.

Side Vents

A well-tailored suit jacket with two side vents will give you a handsome silhouette. It will fit correctly from shoulders to waist, and you'll feel comfortable too.

Lapels

Suits this year are starting to trend towards peaked lapels, a throwback to the swinging 20s. Peaked lapels broaden your shoulders and narrow your waist. If you don't care for peaked lapels, ask for notched lapels, which are classic and will not go out of style anytime soon.

Fabric

Wool is always an excellent investment when choosing a suit fabric. Make sure you look for a high-quality blend so that the suit will last you several years. Cotton suits are attractive and comfortable, but they carry the drawback of wrinkling easily. Also, cotton is a more informal look and may not be appropriate for all occasions. Like cotton, linen wrinkles easily, but this fabric is an excellent choice for a summer suit. Opt for light colors like cream or pale beige.

Patterns

Classic cloth patterns are coming back into style, so you can feel confident donning old favorites like houndstooth, herringbone, pinstripe and rope stripe.

Once you've chosen your suit, don't ruin the look by pairing it with an old pair of shoes. Make sure you rise to the occasion with stylish kicks and elegant accessories, such as a watch or a scarf. Also, make sure you keep your suit in mint condition by storing it wisely, in a place where it won't get dusty or damaged. Your suit is an investment, and with classics coming back into style, your next suit may well give you years of pleasure.
